Bridge to a Better Life

The belief that Man is capable of improving the condition of himself and those around him is a traditional one. This concept began to lose its clear outlines after nineteenth-century Psychology proclaimed quite the opposite—that we remain forever as we were born. Moreover, Psychology advanced a new—and entirely false—postulate: that Man is nothing more than an animal and therefore incapable of increasing his abilities, improving his conduct, or raising his level of intelligence. For this reason, it is now rather difficult for Man to grasp the older and far truer concept—that Man is a spirit, a Thetan , and that he can aspire to and attain higher States of Being. Nevertheless, improvement is a reality. Many higher States of Being are attainable by Man, and now they can be reached through Scientology. L. Ron Hubbard clearly described these states and then explained how they may be attained, arranging them on a chart which graphically displays each step of the route. Life improves gradually—step by step. It improves a little, then a bit more, then still more. It does not happen all at once. One can hardly expect that all possible improvements will occur in an instant, as if struck by some magical injection that cures everything—unless, of course, one subscribes to the notion that there is nothing to be done in this lifetime. In Scientology, it is the individual himself who improves—his Awareness and ability as a Thetan —not his body, not his cars, nor other auxiliary MEST mechanisms that surround him.If one is dealing with a seriously ill person, his mind will be so preoccupied with that condition that he is unlikely to think of anything beyond recovery. If, in that state, someone were to suggest that he return to work or play football for his company team next week, it is doubtful he would even listen. Should his pain subside and he gain the desire to sit up and look around, that would be a considerable improvement; after which he might take pleasure in thinking of walking downstairs and going for a stroll. Yet if, at some point along this gradual improvement, he were asked to recall all the strain of his work or his athletic efforts, it would be too steep a gain in too short a time. In the same way, spiritual advancement occurs by steps, and one cannot demand that an individual instantly, in a single leap, ascend to the highest levels. The chart devised by Mr. Hubbard not only represents the attainable improvements but also the correct sequence that prevents a regression caused by too broad a step. This orderly progression—one gain at a time—as laid out by Mr. Hubbard, enables a person to advance at a sufficiently rapid pace toward a truly elevated State Of Being. The chart that displays these steps of improvement is called the Classification, Gradation and Awareness Chart of Levels and Certificates. It is divided into two halves. The left side shows the steps of Training undertaken by a person in Scientology; the right side shows the steps of auditing. Classification refers to Training in Scientology and to the fact that before a person is awarded a Class of a particular level as an Auditor—and before he is permitted to proceed to the next Class—certain actions must be completed and certain skills attained. Gradation refers to the gradual improvements which occur through Scientology auditing. It is the slope of the road—the gradient steps. We have all encountered gentle slopes, steep climbs, or even sheer walls—but these are not gradients. The desirable route is the gentle, steady ascent upward. As one progresses in Scientology, a person’s Awareness increases. Awareness is raised through both auditing and Training, which are equally necessary for this advance. The Levels of Awareness are listed in the center of the Chart—they correspond precisely to the individual’s progress in auditing and Training.

States of Being

Man is so thoroughly a MAN in appearance that, in most of his philosophies and sciences, he has overlooked the fact that Man is capable of attaining more than one state. Indeed, until we came along and changed their thinking, all nineteenth-century psychologists maintained that Man was unchangeable and incapable of alteration. They described only one state—the mortal Man. If you think about it even briefly, you will see that even as a Man there exists more than one State Of Being. He is rich or poor, well or ill, old or young, married or single. If Man can change his state of existence as a Man, could he not become something different from Man? Not merely a boy, girl, or woman? There are two—or more—lower (and more unpleasant) States of Being. Quite often, Man’s chronic state becomes that of an animal. Not only in psychiatric institutions but also in life itself you can find such changes. In fact, since 1870 psychologists have been asserting that Man is an animal. Man can also become a thing. This condition too may be observed in institutions. But all these are lower states. Are there higher, more desirable states of existence? That is precisely what is described and fully attained in Scientology. We are not trying to make the insane sane. We are trying to make Man a higher being. There are many States of Being that lie beyond the human level. Earlier philosophies touched upon this subject. What is new in Scientology is the fact that one being can achieve several different States of Being within a single lifetime. This concept is so unfamiliar that it is little wonder that Scientologists are sometimes misunderstood and mistaken for healers or psychiatrists. In truth, mankind as a whole has never before seriously considered this. The idea that he, personally, in this lifetime, could become something higher and greater than just a Man is an entirely new concept. He has heard of dying and of his soul thereafter going to hell or to heaven, and he has regarded such prospects variously—as good, dull, or frightening. But when Johnny Smith hears that he can become a higher being, that is something entirely new to him. Some sages in the Himalayas worked in this direction. Gautama Siddhartha (the Buddha) spoke of it. It is said that for this heavenly conclusion some fifteen or twenty years of arduous effort were required. In fact, above Homo sapiens there exist many clearly defined States of Being. A sick man might consider that the best possible state would be that of a healthy man—or that of a dead man—and although these may be desirable to him, they are still States of Man. Throughout his religions Man has long sought to devise a route across the chasm that lies between his present state and higher levels of Awareness. Unfortunately, a vast number of these attempts to Bridge that chasm have ended somewhere in the abyss separating those two conditions. Using this metaphor, the Classification, Gradation and Awareness Chart of Levels and Certificates actually represents that Bridge which spans the gap, bringing Man to higher levels. This is the dream Man has envisioned for at least the last ten thousand years, and it is now attainable—if one follows the steps laid out on the Chart. It is an exact route containing standard procedures which, when correctly applied, produce uniformly predictable results. That Bridge has now been completely built, and one may travel it with full confidence. Look at the Chart of Levels. Every person is located at one of these levels of Awareness. The purpose of Scientology is to help the individual raise his Awareness higher and higher and higher. The rise of Awareness is always accompanied by an increase in ability, intelligence, and potential for survival. As improvement occurs, the individual naturally begins to perceive his next step. For example, a person in “Non-Existence” (-34 on the Scale of Awareness) improves and begins to perceive “Disconnection.” In other words, “Disconnection” (-33 on the Scale) is an advance compared with having no existence at all. By realizing an actual disconnection from life, the person has at least reached the point where he now wishes to correct that condition. The same is true for each level of Awareness. A person who realizes that he is “Introverted” (-11) may then—and only then—realize that he feels “Numbness” (-10 on the Scale) and is therefore unable to obtain a reaction from life. Moving upward on this scale, one successively becomes aware of each next higher level. The Chart, therefore, is a map of what an individual can become aware of. It is, however, very important to note that the Chart concerns the person’s own Awareness—not the conclusions someone else may reach by observing his behavior. Thus we find once again that the individual himself is what matters, for it is to him that the efforts toward improvement are directed. At the level of “Need of Change” (-4), the person becomes aware that he requires change in life, and at that point he has already reached a fairly high level of Awareness. Many people never attain even this level and therefore remain stuck in unpleasant circumstances—they must find ways to reconcile themselves to what they cannot change. Scientology is for those who sincerely desire change, who seek to become better and to gain greater abilities. As one progresses along the Bridge, he becomes a trained Auditor, gaining knowledge of how to help others—he does not merely receive auditing. He attains the State of Clear and advances to higher levels of Auditor Training and higher levels of Awareness as a spiritual being—a Thetan . The levels of Awareness correspond to the various methods and activities that bring about and result in further advances along the route. As can be seen from the Chart, to traverse it fully one must move along both of its sides—through auditing and Training. One must come to know the Axioms of Existence through Training in Scientology if he wishes to attain higher Awareness in life. If he desires to understand himself completely and his relationship to life, he must experience through auditing how those Axioms relate to him. Attempting to ascend only one side of the Bridge is like trying to climb a mountain by hopping on one leg. He who advances step by step along both sides of the Chart will inevitably reach the summit. The Chart is an individual guide—from one’s first Awareness of what Scientology is, to any higher state. Never before has Man had such a map. This is the Bridge to Total Freedom. This is the route. It possesses an exact and standard system of steps. By following it, you become free. “That in which we have made breakthroughs in Scientology, and that in which we have made progress, lies along the line of Man’s long-sought goals—those things he has considered good and desirable in the field of philosophy, we have brought into practical technology. Today in Scientology we have reached the point where mankind should have been for the past five thousand years. You are in a very fortunate position—you do not have to develop the technology of auditing….”

The Purpose of Scientology

The purpose of Scientology is to enable Man to live a better life, by his own definition of it, together with his fellows. Although such a statement may appear simple and unpretentious, the scope it embraces is vast—it includes the dream of every religion: the attainment and restoration of the full, inherent abilities of Man—abilities long hidden yet native to him—which make him an aware cause over Matter, Energy, Space, Time, Form, Thought and Life (MEST and beyond). But long before that ultimate state is reached, Scientology can bring about tremendous changes. Personal relationships can be repaired or revitalized. One’s individual goals can be realized and happiness restored. Where once there was doubt and inadequacy, there will be certainty and self-confidence. Where there was misery and chaos, there will be joy and light. Those who have seen Scientology in action cannot deny the results of its application nor fail to confirm the truth of its effectiveness. For Scientology teaches that Man is his own immortal soul—a Thetan . In Scientology, this mystery has been resolved and a simple answer found.

Dianetic Case Completion

Dianetic Case Completion is a very important step within our technical structure, although it is not a Scientology Grade. Dianetic Case Completion brings freedom from physical pain and unwanted (mis-)emotions that stem from the mind. The Dianetic Result is a happy and healthy human being. Although Dianetics is not a prerequisite for the Scientology Grades and may be applied at any level, its place on the upward route of the Bridge—as shown on the Classification, Gradation and Awareness Chart—lies directly below Scientology Grade 0. When an individual has experienced Dianetics and has gained improvements from it, he also achieves a direct understanding of the human mind and thus reaches a state of excellent readiness to receive Scientology and realize its full potential, as described below.

The Scientology Expanded Grades

When beginning auditing, people are often too burdened with problems to confront the Reactive Mind directly and deal with its core. A person is worried about upcoming payments. He suffers from tension and stress at work. His child needs dental care. His family is on the verge of breaking apart. His income is decreasing day by day, amid rising inflation and taxes—and so on and so forth. The pressures of everyday life completely occupy his attention, and thus he needs an increase of ability simply to cope with this pressure—let alone to overcome it and become free from it. The Scientology Expanded Grades are a series of auditing processes aimed at improving certain abilities of the individual, bringing him into a more favorable position with regard to survival. L. Ron Hubbard discovered that there are definite barriers which stand in the way of successful living. When a person restores the corresponding abilities, he begins to survive normally in that area of life. When those abilities are missing, he does not survive well and must expend great effort merely to get along. The Expanded Grades consist of six separate Grades and include approximately 150 different processes through which a person is audited. Each Grade was developed by Mr. Hubbard to restore or strengthen specific abilities necessary for success in life. When a particular process is taken to its desired result, the person’s Awareness in that area increases, and he becomes more capable regarding it. Running additional processes on the same subject restores further abilities in that field. When all processes of a Grade have been completed and the individual has experienced a recovery of abilities in the area addressed by that Grade, he moves on to the next Grade—another field of ability. In this way, the Expanded Grades bring about a gradual recovery of an individual’s abilities—abilities which may have been buried so deeply that the person had come to believe all his failures were simply the “natural consequences” of life itself. In fact, such failures are not natural at all. Through the auditing of the Scientology Expanded Grades, Man’s true potentials and characteristics become evident and flower to their full extent.

The Six Expanded Grades are as follows:
Expanded ARC Straightwire

“ARC” refers to the components of understanding—Affinity, Reality, and Communication. “Straightwire” is another term for “direct memory.” It is called that because, in the auditing processes of this Grade, the Auditor directs the Preclear’s memory—stringing a line, as it were, like a telephone wire, between the Preclear and the Standard Memory Bank in his mind. The concept of ARC is one of the most important factors in all life. If a person can establish ARC with something, he can achieve a true understanding of it. As the subject of Scientology is the individual himself, it follows that the first of the Grades deals with restoring the Preclear’s direct and immediate understanding of himself. This is achieved through running the ARC Straightwire processes.
ARC Straightwire explores the abilities of a person’s memory and mind. If a person could raise his ARC toward himself, he would realize that he might, in fact, be his own best friend. A person who genuinely likes himself—this is the most vital cornerstone in the foundation of the Bridge to Total Freedom.

Expanded Grade 0: Communication Release

The ability to communicate is one of the fundamental abilities of a living being. Too often in the course of life, this ability begins to fade. As a result, many people become shy and withdrawn. Some experience a nervous stomach spasm at the mere thought of addressing a group. Others are unable to converse on certain subjects or feel extreme discomfort communicating with the opposite sex or with people of another age group. The number of ways in which a suppressed ability to communicate can manifest itself is practically limitless. The processes of this Grade address the individual’s ability to communicate and, by his own estimation, free him from any blockages in this area—thus restoring his ability to communicate with anyone on any subject. And although this state might seem impossible to some, in fact many thousands of people have attained exactly this result on Expanded Grade 0. Along with the ability to communicate comes the joy of free and harmonious association with others. We instinctively admire a great actor, artist, or musician, and society in general looks upon them as being somehow above the ordinary. They truly are extraordinary—they form a stratum above the common man. The fact that they were born with such talent and did not have to achieve it through auditing does not make them any less higher beings. One who is truly able to communicate with others is a higher being—capable of creating new worlds. Through auditing, a person can be brought to this state—the state of the ability to communicate.

ABILITIES GAINED
FLOW 1: Ability to communicate freely with anyone on any subject. Enjoys originating a communication flow.
FLOW 2: Willingness to receive communication freely from others on any subject.
FLOW 3: Allows others to communicate freely with others on any subject.

Expanded Grade I: Problems Release

This Grade addresses the problems a person encounters in life. One can become so enmeshed in unwanted circumstances that any chance of attaining happiness no longer seems real. Problems with personal relationships, finances, family, work, purposes and ambitions, and so forth can consume an enormous amount of time. It is particularly characteristic of civilized Man that he becomes utterly bogged down in PROBLEMS—and the more he “solves” them, the more deeply he becomes enmeshed. Rare indeed is the being who can perceive the true source of problems and, by doing so, cause them to vanish—and when such a being is met, he is not easily understood. L. Ron Hubbard discovered the exact mechanism inherent in all problems without exception. Every problem, regardless of its complexity or magnitude, has at its root the opposition of two intentions. All problems in a person’s life arise from opposing intentions. This mechanism renders a person indecisive, troubles him, and leads to “stuck” conditions and unresolved difficulties in his life. The processes of Expanded Grade I bring the Preclear to the ability to recognize the true source of problems—at which point they “vanish” and cease to be problems. When a person can do this—cause problems to vanish simply by viewing them—he is no longer merely Man. Such beings are extremely rare. Masters of problem destruction are legendary. Man solves problems—but a being in a higher state looks at them, and they disappear. These are remarkable manifestations—phenomena with which Man, before Scientology, had never dealt and which he had never studied. Through auditing, a person can be brought to this ability. This is the Grade I Release.

ABILITIES GAINED
FLOW 1: Ability to recognize the source of problems and cause them to disappear.
FLOW 2: Feels free regarding any problems others may have with him and is able to recognize their source.
FLOW 3: Feels free regarding any problems others may have with others or because of others, and can recognize their source.

Expanded Grade II: Release Of Relief

People struggle to cope with the hostility and suffering of life. Being subjected to the wounds of the “fangs and claws of cruel fortune,” they respond in kind, only to discover they are caught in a trap with no apparent escape. This trap consists of a person’s own transgressions against the precepts of family, society, and humanity. Throughout life, a person agrees to follow certain rules of conduct—precepts that help him harmoniously integrate his own survival with that of others. When a person inadvertently breaks these agreed-upon rules, or intentionally transgresses them with what he considers a “good reason,” suffering begins. Upon committing a transgression, the individual feels he must alleviate the consequences of his actions for others, leading him to withdraw or alter his feelings toward those he has harmed. This is the mechanism through which people generate misery, grief, and animosity toward one another. It is the source of a guilty conscience, desire for revenge, and, in fact, all suffering and hostility encountered in life. Humankind never knew how to achieve relief from this, except in the rare phenomena of miracle-workers whom he revered as saints. The secret is that a person binds himself to what he avoids. The ability to easily relieve oneself and others of life’s hostility and suffering is an art Man has previously only seen in healers. The Expanded Grade II processes give the individual the ability to dismantle this mechanism for himself. A complete review of this aspect of one’s past, conducted in the calm, analytical setting of an auditing session, produces tremendous relief. The processes of Expanded Grade II erase these hostilities and sufferings from the person’s life and free him from the consequences of past actions that have pinned him to his history.

ABILITIES GAINED
FLOW 1: Ability to be a cause without fear of harming others.
FLOW 2: Willingness to allow others to be a cause over himself.
FLOW 3: Willingness to allow others to be a cause over others without feeling the need to intervene.

Expanded Grade III: Release Of Freedom

A person is chained to disturbances that occurred in the past. He never understood why he faced such disturbances or misunderstanding from family, others, or situations. Most people remain trapped in the troubles that happened to them previously. Their lives are sorrowful. Freedom from past disturbances and the ability to face the future is a nearly unknown state for Man. Yet it is attainable through auditing. People may unconsciously leave a great deal of attention on incidents where there was significant agitation—sometimes for many years after the events have ended. The processes of Grade III identify specific incidents associated with troubling change and work with them.

ABILITIES GAINED
FLOW 1: Ability to face the future. Ability to experience sudden change without distress.
FLOW 2: Allows others to possess the reality they have and choose their future at their discretion; also capable of initiating change in another’s life without adverse consequences.
FLOW 3: Prepared for change and interaction among others.

Expanded Grade IV: Release Of Abilities

The next barrier in restoring abilities is addressed in Grade IV. A person’s abilities tend to become individually specialized. He invests so much intention in one action that he becomes clumsy in others. Exiting this fixed state and gaining the ability to do something new is achieved in Grade IV Release—this frees a person’s potential. The mechanism by which one falls into this trap is based on concepts of right and wrong. Every individual has an innate drive to be right. The personality strives to be right and resists being wrong, regardless of the meanings attached to these concepts. In the cycle of agitation, misfortunes, and failures, these concepts can become seriously confused. The result is behavior patterns that do not reflect the best interests of survival because they are fixed and repeat again and again in an aberrated effort to be right. The processes of Grade IV give the Preclear the ability to re-examine his own relationship to all life and free himself from thought and action patterns that may appear to promote survival but in reality lead anywhere but toward it. When a person reaches this realization, it produces remarkable changes in life and incredible enhancement in the ability to choose, act, and enjoy new activity. Many events occurring over years of life suppress a person’s abilities. Even those that pass almost unnoticed still affect current life. Auditing allows a person to restore these abilities and even increase them beyond previously imagined limits. In two to three months of regular auditing, a person can make significant progress in restoring his natural abilities and experience how beautiful life can be once these barriers are removed. The improvements gained in the Scientology Expanded Grades literally bring a person into new states of existence.

NEW ERA DIANETIC (NED) Auditing

A person possessing abilities in any area can produce, act, function, and manage activity in that area. A skilled acrobat, for example, performs stunts with expertise. A competent cook prepares exquisite meals. And a person who has gained the abilities achieved on the Scientology Expanded Grades is now able simply to live! Consequently, he exercises greater control over his life, maintains a better mood, and enjoys increased personal power. He has also approached the ability to Release himself from the reactive mind and its contents. This is impossible when a person is heavily distracted by his environment or unable to overcome life’s obstacles—obstacles that the Expanded Grades address. Initially, one can make contact with engrams and erase them using the methods described in Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health, leading to improvements greater than ever before. These methods work consistently, but L. Ron Hubbard continued his research seeking technology that would allow the work to be faster and simpler. Advancements such as the development of the E-Meter made auditing a faster and more precise process, with contributions also coming from the development of the Scientology Expanded Grades. Building on the core principles of Dianetics, Mr. Hubbard conducted further research and developed advanced Dianetic procedures. That these later improvements were built upon the original axioms and procedures of Dianetics, as outlined in his originally published materials, is irrefutable evidence of the accuracy of his initial theories. To illustrate the effectiveness of Mr. Hubbard’s new methods: to achieve the highest possible results using the 1950 methods, Preclears required approximately 2,000 hours of auditing. With modern Dianetics and Scientology methods, this time is reduced roughly tenfold. New Era Dianetics (NED) is the technology containing the ultimate improvements in auditing made by L. Ron Hubbard. He developed it following discoveries made in 1978. Using NED, Preclears achieve their Dianetic processing objectives much faster than anyone could have believed possible with earlier Dianetics. The reactive mind lashes the individual, imposing thoughtless, irrational dictates from its contents, resulting in anxiety, fears, unpleasant emotions and sensations, strange pains, and a host of other undesirable effects. RELEASING the person from this unquestioned influence elevates him to a new level of self-determination. A person may have suffered from emotional shock, such as the loss of a loved one. NED auditing works with these losses, and while it cannot replace the lost person, it can free the individual from the spiritual trauma associated with that loss. Many people in life are hindered by what they consider personal faults or inability. NED methods can erase the sources of such disturbances, greatly clarifying a person’s perception of himself and clearing related emotions. New Era Dianetic auditing consists of at least eleven programs—series of auditing steps designed to work on a specific aspect of the case—and actions aimed at the engrams contained in the reactive mind. Various psychosomatic pains, feelings, emotions, sensations, and similar phenomena usually originate from these reactive mind engrams. Through applying the NED auditing procedures, the Preclear erases his engrams and nullifies the harmful energy contained within them. The NED procedures are precise. Completion of New Era Dianetics creates a healthy, happy person with renewed physical and restored innate mental health.

The State of Clear

Clearing is the erasure of the reactive mind. All the griefs and traumas a person experiences are recorded in the reactive mind. There is a specific path leading away from reactivity, aberration, and the identification of everything with everything. This path leads to increased abilities, overall competence, and other remarkable improvements that can be precisely measured and experienced. Along this path are certain fundamental milestones that must be completed, as presented on the Bridge through the Expanded Grades and New Era Dianetic (NED) auditing. The goal of progressing along this path is the erasure of the reactive mind. When this occurs, a person reaches the state of Clear. It is impossible to attain this higher state by skipping the lower grades. A Clear is a person who no longer has his own reactive mind. He has permanently destroyed it. In the absence of the reactive mind’s “stimulus-response” mechanism—which can cause pain, unwanted sensations, and negative emotions—a Clear is able to act rather than react. A Clear possesses a very high degree of personal integrity and honesty and is the living embodiment of the principle that a person is fundamentally good. His basic being returns, and the abilities of his essential personality fully unfold. He is freed from all fears, anxieties, and irrational thoughts that were held by pain in the reactive mind—in short, he regains himself. Without a reactive mind, it is much easier for a person to be himself. Until a person has been cleared of this, no matter how capable he may have become through earlier auditing, he will inevitably, by the laws of the universe, sooner or later be pulled back into the reactive mind. This is why clearing is absolutely essential. Clear is the complete erasure of the reactive mind, a stable state not subject to decay. Every individual is different, and each person requires his own type and amount of auditing to erase the reactive mind. This state is achieved in personal auditing in two different places. The first is New Era Dianetics (NED). If a person does not become Clear through NED, he continues through other procedures and attains it on the Clear Course, a special auditing procedure. No other grades or auditing services bring about the state of Clear. The state of Clear never existed before. No matter how capable a person was, or what powers or abilities he possessed, the reactive mind was in place, unexposed, and ultimately it would drag the person down again.

Advanced Dianetics

Advanced Dianetics is a variation of Dianetics that applies New Era Dianetic (NED) technology in a specialized manner to achieve specific results. Some individuals require specially tailored Dianetic technology to address their unique needs—which is provided in Advanced Dianetics. While NED has very broad application, Advanced Dianetics is specifically adapted to the Preclear’s requirements. Advanced Dianetics is not the same as NED and requires special Training and skills. Grade VI: Full Track Release

A person has little or no Awareness of their “time track.” This is a sequential recording of the moments of their life, extending back as far as they have lived. Their past constitutes their full track. There are three conditions regarding it: at first, the person is unaware that they possess it; then they come to appreciation regarding what they have discovered about their past; and finally, they discern exactly what brought them into specific circumstances. The Clear Course

Upon completion of the theory of the Clear Course, you will be prepared to confront and control the reactive mind—to conquer it forever! From The State of Clear—Into Eternity

“As I continued my research, I never ceased to be amazed at the magnitude of the gains potentially available to the individual. There are approximately six general categories of case improvement:

5. The Pre-OT Levels, which lead along the road of personal spiritual freedom. These continue upward through all of the New OT Levels, both audited and Solo. What is astonishing—according to the enthusiastic reports—is that each of these levels, individually, possesses its own impressive range of accomplishments....”
The term “OT” (abbreviation for Operating Thetan ) has meaning primarily for experienced Scientologists. By “Operating” is meant “able to act and handle things,” and by “Thetan ”—the spiritual being, the basic self. Theta is the Greek letter meaning Life or Spirit. Thus, an Operating Thetan is one who can handle things without the need to use a body or other physical means. In essence, man is himself and possesses the capability to control MEST and to exist without physical support. This does not mean he becomes God; it means he becomes fully himself. Since 1952, we have been able to bring a man into a spiritual beingness within seconds. It was astonishing—but unstable. After a minute, a day, or a week, the person would again become Human, and all such experiences would remain but a dim memory. This is what occurred in those early processes with the Exteriorized Thetan . However, this state is not a “different form of existence.” It frequently occurs quite naturally during the processing of many higher Release Grades. It is, of course, only a faint shadow—a forerunner of the Operating Thetan .
“... 6. The actual OT Levels now begin with New OT VIII and continue upward. According to the records of spiritual research and the reports of Pre-OTs and OTs, in an aberrated state the individual simply cannot comprehend the Magnitude of improvement available to him. That such an amount of gain can be available to one being is a never-ending source of wonder to those who follow this route exactly. In an aberrated condition, it is exceedingly unlikely that a person would ever look upward and still maintain reality on what he has seen. In this high-speed age, people may think it all should happen in a minute—or a minute and a half—as though it were an injection of some potion that brings eternal freedom. Alas, this universe is structured otherwise. This universe is based upon the concept of Quantity, and it exists in enormous measure. Strict arithmetic determines the number of electrons in an atom, the number of atoms in a molecule, the number of molecules in a drop of water; the number of planets in systems, the number of suns in a galaxy—the figures become staggering. TIME on this planet, where life is brief and desperate, is scarcely perceived at all. Only recently did geologists conclude that Man must have been here for a million years. Ha! They have learned little indeed! The age of this and other universes is very, very great. It is not eternity—but nearly so. And therefore, without delving into questions of how long you have been around (those brain-theory people would start protesting, horrified at any talk of spirit), let us ask this instead: If it took a being half of eternity to get thoroughly entangled—how entangled could he be? Right. Go to the root of the problem. Go all the way!” And now you may begin to glimpse the vast magnitude of spiritual attainment available to Man. This may also clarify why, on each of the six levels previously described, there are—according to all gathered reports—so many new and unique gains. Right. You got it? Good. Now we come to the next question, since this morning seems to be filled with cognitions: If it took a being half an eternity to get himself thoroughly entangled, how long will it take to unravel and free him? Now—before the corners of your mouth start to sag and before you begin to slip into apathy while pondering this—take a look at the miracles of Dianetics and Scientology. It doesn’t take half an eternity. It doesn’t take thousands of years—though that might seem reasonable to expect. It doesn’t even take centuries. It takes only years. That’s right. Years. The six general categories of improvement outlined above form something like an expanding scale. The first may begin with an Introductory Process or an ASSIST—perhaps within half an hour, plus a few evenings spent reading books. The next level (consisting of formal auditing and Purification Rundown) might take a week or two. The third level—made up of the Lower Levels and further study, depending on schedule and all that—may take about a month. The fourth level, depending on the case, may require more time—but it can culminate in the state of Clear. The fourth range now truly begins to lengthen. To become a Solo Auditor and progress through the OT Levels may take months. It may extend considerably through OT III, and further time is added with the audited New OT Levels and Solo OTs. The gains at every point in this range, according to Preclear reports, make the progress on the lower side of the Bridge appear as mere inches. Yet even the lowest of these ranges, in terms of progress, stands far above anything Man has ever known. And now, as we reach the sixth range, prepare yourself for a long leap—it will not happen in a minute. Here is what we are really looking at: the relationship between time invested and the gains achieved, according to reports. Once you have become Clear and reached Solo, you must schedule your days so as to include time for auditing—and simply continue and continue. Some stop after a week’s rush. Life seems too interesting. Or they become “too busy” to get correction and continue their advance. Yet personally, they are moving at a much faster rate—perhaps their interests simply multiply. But if they just continue, and do all that is necessary to maintain their ability to do so, then—according to the glowing reports—it is an exceedingly worthwhile pursuit. So what are you really confronting? The higher the level, the longer the time—because you are dealing with an ever greater range of potential gains. And what do you ultimately achieve? You are moving toward Eternity. Do you think time lies behind you? Change your thinking. Look Forward. There lies Eternity— and you will be within it. You will have to be in good shape or in bad. I am truly sorry to have to tell you this—but you have no choice. One may gain the ability to escape this planet—but there is no escape from life. Here and now—and perhaps only briefly—we have this opportunity: to become free, to do it. Planets and civilizations are fragile things. They do not endure long. I cannot promise you that you will make it. I can only provide you with the knowledge and place in your hands your chance. The rest is up to you. I strongly advise you to work at it earnestly— do not let this fleeting breath of Eternity pass you by. For this is your future—Eternity. It will be good—or it will be bad. And for you, my most respected friend, I have done all I could to help make it good.

Definition of OT

Operating — the word itself carries the sense of “to control,” “to handle,” or “to work with.” You work with an E-Meter, you operate a car, you handle the valves of a steam engine, a locomotive, or a ship—you see? To operate means to control. And one can also control oneself—that is possible. You are able to move through space, to do this or that. You direct yourself—in other words, you are able to control. That is what this word “Operating” means: to handle, to be in control of, to work with something. The word Thetan , of course, derives from the Greek letter Theta (Θ). In Greek philosophy, “Theta” was traditionally used as the symbol denoting thought. The modern way of forming a noun in the English language is by adding the letter “n” to the root. If you want to create an adjective, you add “-ic” or “-ical,” but to form a noun, you attach “-n.” The problem in Scientology was that in other teachings concerning the human mind and in other spiritual philosophies this phenomenon did not actually exist—they were unaware of it. Therefore, naturally, there was no term for something they themselves did not know about. A whole new field of knowledge had come into existence, for which a new terminology had to be created. However, this knowledge does not lie within the realm of ordinary human experience; it does not belong to any traditional branch of study. But in this particular case, the letter “Theta” does come from tradition, specifically from the field of Greek philosophy. Yet, in our usage, we have changed its meaning. We use it to signify a unit of life—a being, an individual who lives and who possesses the capability to think. Indeed, you could discover that in some branches of Greek philosophy this is exactly the sense given to it. When they spoke of “thought,” they referred to the thinking of a man as something separate from his body. Incidentally, the concept that there exists a spirit inhabiting a body is one of the oldest ideas of mankind—it is by no means something new. On the contrary, the idea that “all men are animals” is a very recent one—apparently based on experience with psychologists.

Operating Thetan
 
So we are dealing with a Thetan —that is, a being. In short, an individual is a being or a unit of life that resides in clay. In other words, he obtains a body and moves it around. In this sense, anyone who can move is Operating as a Thetan —but that is not what we mean. What we mean is someone who is able to operate without a body. This means that he can not only control bodies but can also control and act without one. That was the original meaning intended. Definition of an Operating Thetan : A being—and this gives us a highly specialized definition—who is CAUSE over thought, life, matter, energy, space, and time; CAUSE over all of them. When we use the word cause here, we refer to the communication formula: Cause–distance–effect. The individual as cause is the source of action or impulse. Therefore, under this designation, we mean one who is able to operate while being entirely outside the bounds of contemptible clay.

The State Of A Thetan
 
This, of course, differs from a Clear, because there are degrees—not degrees of OT, but degrees of the state of a Thetan . As I have just said, every Thetan , unless he has completely gone out of communication—having perhaps overindulged in modern processed food containing preservatives—that fellow, to some degree, operates. Even though he may be largely at effect, he can still emit a small impulse. In fact, such a being is an interiorized Thetan —turned inward and fixed within—the ordinary, simple, standard plant-like humanoid. A plant-like humanoid is a personality possessing human characteristics. This does not mean he is “humane” in his dealings with things—not at all. He simply is the body. Descending far, far down, one finds the individual who is only a body. He is not there as a spirit. The spirit is fixed and glued into MEST and is itself completely dead. Matter, Energy, Space and Time live—but he himself is not there at all. He does not even know he is here, you understand? Nothing whatsoever. Naturally, such a being comes to a philosophy in which everything is matter—including himself, of course.

The OT Scale

At the lower edge of the scale, however, are the psychotic and the neurotic—people who are simply and continually motionless, not even aware of MEST. The psychiatrist, the commissar, and all such unpleasant types—why, even an insect is much higher on that scale. The highest state on such a scale would be a Thetan who does not have to operate. He would be in a complete, almost unattainable absolute. But theoretically, he would exist in such a state of serenity, calmness, and disconnection from the physical universe that he would not even be in it. He would be outside the time-stream; he would not care about anything at all—and so forth. This, of course, is the theoretical summit of the scale—a Thetan who has no necessity to operate. The individual at the very bottom of the scale leading upward to OT and above OT is, naturally, the total effect of everything. He can be cause over nothing. The individual at the absolute top of this scale is potentially cause over all—over life, thought, matter, space, and time—without the compulsive urge to be cause in anything. However, such a being would be in a state of no-game condition. And one of the fundamental characteristics of a Thetan is that he loves to play. Therefore, below that theoretical absolute of the state of a Thetan , you have an Operating Thetan . He can operate—and he will operate, you see? Even if all he does is create a mock-up of his own universe—he will stir things up. That is one of the most basic and naturally inherent characteristics of a Thetan —he loves to stir around. He might not have to do it—but when he doesn’t, he gets bored. After remaining for a while in that condition of total serenity and elevation, one begins to feel that it is just a bit too close to the absolute. And so, one decides to go and insert some strange and hitherto unseen mock-up right in the middle of someone else’s universe, just like that. You simply want to see what happens!

A Different Being

But today we are dealing with a somewhat different being from that theoretical state in which the individual existed at the very beginning of this universe. That individual possessed full potential but no experience. He was potentially capable of having all experience, yet he had none.He was potentially capable of knowing everything. So he began to sink down the conditions of the scale and, eventually, lost the ability to regulate his own state. He got into serious trouble, tumbled head over heels, and hit bottom—hard. Now, when you return someone to the state of an Operating Thetan , you end up with someone different from any being that ever existed on the track—because he operates with experience.

From Clear to OT

A person ascends upward, and it all happens gradually. Indeed, the distance between Clear and OT is probably greater than that between the average man and Clear. I speak of this vast distance because here is what occurs: he ascends the steps of the ladder, integrating all the experience he has gathered along the way. We then obtain this extraordinary being—one who does not suddenly become omnipotent or something of that sort—but who is omnipotent, and yet still capable of repairing a child’s toy train, you see? He knows all about life. He knows all the interweavings of cause and effect among various things—how they interconnect, what happens, and what does not happen—he knows all this from experience. Without suffering from that experience, he nevertheless possesses it. The actual fact is that he is a walking miracle—one who fully understands all miracles.

OT

In other words, “a knowing and willing cause” is part of the definition of OT, whereas the complete absence of a bank is the definition of a Clear. As you progress from Clear to OT, naturally all these additional tricks and wondrous state-changes and such—everything—come under your management and your jurisdiction one by one. And you will gradually reach the point where you can turn all of this on and off at will.

New OT I
Improvement Of Your Level Of Causality And Intent

“And as you progress from Clear to OT, naturally all those extra bells and whistles and the wondrous transformations of state and so forth—they all come under your governing and your jurisdiction one by one. And you will gradually get to the point where you can switch all that on and off at will.” — LRH Grade I OT is the first rung on the ladder leading to full OT capabilities, to which a Clear ascends. When you receive your personal invitation to begin the New OT 1 from your Case-Supervisor at the Advanced Org, you proceed to the New OT 1 Course, enrol in your confidential course package and start study. On completion of the theoretical and practical sections of this Course, you begin Solo auditing under the supervision of a trained solo Case-Supervisor at the Advanced Org. In embarking on the materials of New OT 1, you immediately discover that LRH addresses you directly as an OT. And now you are indeed following the route he laid out—an accurately marked path which will eventually lead you to full OT. As you progress on this level, illusions of this false universe dissipate. You will gain knowledge of hitherto hidden truths and annihilate the lies that were blocking your advance to spiritual freedom. As a pre-OT on New OT 1, you will experience a giant increase in your ability to control your own postulates, discovering a new level of causality—from this time forward as a pre-OT. As you move along this level, problems, obstacles and barriers vanish. With each session you will gain ever greater abilities as a being, with clearer and stronger postulates. OT 1 not only raises the level of your case; one of its remarkable effects is the elevation of the pre-OT’s ability to be the cause of what he intends to manifest—often far beyond the point where he physically stands. OT III – The Wall Of Fire

“. . . I was at last able to make a discovery that would permit people to safely go through that area. To go through the Wall of Fire and emerge unharmed on the other side – all this is now quite simple to accomplish, provided that one has an exceptionally well-trained Auditor, and provided that he applies the precise technology.” – LRH. The secret of this universe and specifically our sector of the universe has been completely sealed on the track. No one has ever been able to break through to it and get away with it, while retaining the Awareness of what occurred. The fact is that everyone without exception who attempted to break through this layered sealing (and I am certain that many did) perished. The material associated with this sector is so monstrous that it is safe to assert – it is arranged in such a way as to kill everyone who would dare to open its true content. In January and February of this year, I located a route that permitted one to pass this and obtain this material, and furthermore, I managed to survive. I am absolutely certain that I am the first survivor of all those who have ever attempted to obtain this material. The material of which I speak is, of course, material of a very high level, and so I hope you will forgive me for not describing it here in all the details. To find some way to safely take individuals through this level became my task for the subsequent six months. I had no guarantees that I myself could survive after all this – and that meant the same would happen to other people once they became ClearS and tried to move further. And now, six or seven weeks ago, I was at last able to make a discovery that would permit people to safely go through that area. To go through the Wall of Fire and emerge unharmed on the other side – all this is now quite simple to accomplish, provided that one has an exceptionally well-trained Auditor, and provided that he applies the precise technology. No one on the lower levels is endangered by colliding with this, since it concerns the formation of the very society in which we live. A person becomes a Clear on the First Dynamic. In order to become an OT, one must be cleared on all Dynamics, including the Dynamic of society and the Dynamic of the physical universe. And I made this breakthrough. I am not telling you that I did not have to work hard at it. In the last eighteen years, this was the most difficult ordeal of all those I have confronted, and I faced it head-on, so that when you reach this level, it will not be so hard for you. On the lower steps, a person is mainly interested in himself, his own CASE, and his own immediate relatives. But moving upward, a person begins to be more interested in his surroundings and the world in which he lives; and along with this interest comes the realization that everything was not as well as it seems. The utter truth is that a gigantic catastrophe occurred on this planet and on the other 75 planets that made up the Confederacy, 75 million years ago. From that moment on, it became a wasteland, the dwelling place of a small handful of beings who attempted to bring their technology to a level where someone could try to go forward, penetrate through this catastrophe, and unravel its consequences. And now we are on the right path to bringing this aspiration into being. As the ability to confront rises, so does the level of responsibility. An OT cannot remain an OT in a gone-berserk world or in a crazy universe. And although the scale of this work is almost unimaginably vast, nevertheless we are most certainly creating definite and positive pathways to all of this, and we will see this matter through to the end. We no longer view time from the perspective of MAN, whose real time span is 70 years. We are dealing with Eras, and on the higher levels, we have enough time to successfully complete this matter, provided that we work fast enough on the lower levels and in society itself, to prevent it from self-destructing before we can bring our designs to fruition and achieve our goals. It will probably slightly exceed your reality if I tell you that we intend to save this sector of the universe. No one has been capable of doing that for 75 million years. We are the first. And during all this time, the population of the planet has seen nothing but suffering and despair. Life is not obliged to be a stinking cesspool, and the planet’s population does not have to consist of insane persons. The overall situation is very simple to remedy. From now on, the world will begin to change: but if it ever changes at all and becomes sane, it will be because of Scientologists, because of the Auditor and his technical skills, because of the Organization, because of the Staff member of the Organization and his dedicated labor. In the entire vast universe, man has no other hope but us. This is a gigantic responsibility. And I have carried it alone for too long. Now YOU will share it with me.

History Of The Saint Hill Special Briefing Course (SHSBC)

While guiding the expansion of Scientology from Saint Hill in the early 60s, Ron charted the road to Clear and OT. These were years of intense research and discoveries. Ron required time to conduct this research, but he did not want to deprive Scientologists of the opportunity to learn from him personally, and so, as was always customary for him, he wanted his discoveries to be known immediately upon their Release. Therefore, on Ron's birthday, March 13, 1961, the doors of the Saint Hill Manor opened to students from all corners of the world. He wrote: "A small, selected group in Scientology may study, train, and be audited at Saint Hill until I give other directions." This was the beginning of the legendary Saint Hill Special Briefing Course. Students came from all over the world, and Ron lectured regularly for the next five and a half years. The Course was a staggering success, and soon the graduates of this Course, the "Saint Hillers," began to change the face of Scientology worldwide. In 1962, Ron wrote: "The Saint Hill Special Briefing Course is intended to train superb Auditors. That is its entire purpose. The clearing of the planet is what happens in the wake of this Training. And the graduates, by establishing the technology in their area of influence and working together with other graduates, are becoming Clears or are already Clears." "To deliver civilization from insanity, criminality, and war, to make it so that the talented can flourish, and the honest have rights, and the individual can rise to the greatest heights, many Auditors are required. Fundamentals of Scientology
From December 1951 to December 1955
On Level B, you transition from the advanced methods of Dianetics to the fundamentals of Scientology, including the discovery of the Thetan , his abilities, and his interrelationship with the physical universe (MEST) and other living beings.

Level C

Fundamentals of Possession and Object Processes
From December 1955 to December 1959
On Level C, you will study the crucial technologies of Object Processes, Management-Communication-Ownership (MCO), High Level Training TRs, and the Clearing and Possession Procedures. You will also see the LRH Technical Training Films: High Level Training TRs; Starting, Changing and Stopping; Evaluation of the Case State using tests and the E-Meter. The Clearing Congress films are included on this checksheet.

Level D

Fundamentals of the E-Meter
From December 1959 to June 1961
In these lectures, Ron gives a detailed account of the fundamentals of knowledge necessary for a competent Auditor. He talks about the E-Meter, what it measures, and how it is used in auditing and when conducting evaluation. You will watch all of Ron's E-Meter films: The Unfathomable Man, The Tone Scale, Tone Scale Drill Film, How the E-Meter Works, E-Meter Reads, E-Meter Reads Drill Film, The History of the E-Meter, PC Indicators, PC Indicators Drill Film – and you will do drills from the E-Meter books.

Level E

Principles of auditing
From June 1961 to October 1961
Why is not-knowing replaced by knowing? How is the process conducted to cure an alcoholic? On this level, Ron gives amazing examples of how to cope with everyday life, discusses the structure of the mind, and talks about confront, Clear, and TRs.

Level F

Problem Resolution
From October 1961 to December 1961
Ron unravels the complexities associated with the application of clearing technology. He addresses problems themselves. Ron will give you an understanding of two vital discoveries you need to know about – the Principle of Preliminary Confusion and the Problems Intensive.

Level G

Fundamentals of Confessionals
From December 1961 to June 1962
You will discover how and why auditing works, why major auditing errors occur, and how the Auditor handles this to achieve an increased level of gains for the Preclear. You also train to spot every manifestation of an undiscovered withhold and handle them, clear undiscovered withholds, and spot "dirty" needles by altering the safety check questions.

Level H

Fundamentals of Engram Running
From June 1962 to October 1962
On this level, Ron thoroughly familiarizes the student with the operation of the E-Meter, explaining what it reacts to and exactly what it can be used for. He particularly emphasizes the fact that professional command of the fundamentals is equivalent to an improved ability to audit and, accordingly, more rapid clearing, and for this, the student is required to have perfect command of the fundamentals of auditing. Ron describes the basic rules for conducting Engram Running and obnosis with the Preclear.

Level I

Fundamentals of Engram Running and Extinguishment
From October 1962 to May 1963
Ron continues to instruct students on the use of clearing technology. You will receive a vast amount of new data on the E-Meter, PC Indicators, Session Fundamentals, Possession, Assists, and many other things. What is an implant, and how is it handled? You will hear Ron supervise student auditing sessions with the use of a special audio device. Ron will also tell you why it is critically important to become a high-class Auditor in order to achieve the state of Clear and OT.

Level J

Handling ARC Breaks and Service Facsimiles
From May 1963 to December 1963 These months were a period of the most intense research for Ron. He researched the abilities of the OT and developed new basic technology so that any person from the street could be taken all the way to OT.

Level K

PC Indicator Recognition
From December 1963 to April 1965
This was a period of key discoveries in Scientology. During this time, Ron developed Training technology and finally completed the research on the Clearing Course. On this level, you will watch the Technical Training Films: PC Indicators, PC Indicators Drill Film, and read the Case Correction Book. You will train the ability to spot and correct PC Indicators and use these indicators for case correction. On this level, you will also see the films Track Analysis and Running GPMs (Goals, Problems, Mass) shot by LRH for the Saint Hill Special Briefing Course.

Level L

Fundamentals of the Grade Chart
From April 1965 to May 1970
This was a time of intense activity, with both technical and administrative discoveries occurring at an incredible speed. These lectures contain a mass of Ron's breakthroughs in the field of organizational technology, including the Condition Formulas, which can be applied to improve the level of activity and condition of any individual, group, or project.

Level M

Fundamentals of Case Repair and Resistant Cases
From May 1970 to June 1978 Here you will receive instructions on the application of the principles of case repair and the correction of resistant cases. Working with the Tone Arm, basic correction lists, Expanded Dianetics, the Original Correction Program, the PTS Program, additional data on Final Phenomena, Case Supervisor Series 53, the Green Form and Green Form 40 Extended. This level also outlines all forms of Word Clearing, the Case Supervisor Series, and the Basic auditing Series.

Level N

Developments and Methods of Modern auditing
From June 1978 to the present
On this level, you will learn about the developments used in modern auditing, including New Era Dianetics (NED) auditing, Rudiments, the Model Session, Tone 40, Auditor Beingness, the Interiorization Program, Confessionals, the Program for the Suppressed Person (SP), Correction Technology (Destructive Missed Word Finding, False Data Stripping, and much more), the Purification Rundown, the Happiness Program, the False Purpose Rundown, the Auditor Administration Series, and the checksheets for the Grade processes.

Level O

Auditing on Expanded Lower Grades, NED and Correction Actions
Level O consists of Training and practical actions for studying auditing on the Model Session, Rudiments, Possession, Grades, Repair, and New Era Dianetics (NED) auditing. On this course, you will gain certainty regarding the technical fundamentals and polish your beingness as an Auditor. On this level, the emphasis is placed on auditing. During auditing, your sessions will be video recorded so that you can correct your own deficiencies, and then you will pass a video exam on TRs and E-Meter operation with an SHSBC Supervisor.

Level P
Auditing On Expanded Dianetics And Specialist Program

On this final level of the Saint Hill Special Briefing Course (SHSBC), you will undergo Training on all actions pertaining to Expanded Dianetics and specialist programs, and then you will audit these actions with a special emphasis on Activity. Your auditing skills will be honed using the electronic monitoring system that the SHSBC Supervisor uses in the practice room, and by video recording your sessions so that you can correct your own deficiencies. Before graduating, you will again need to pass a video exam on TRs and E-Meter operation with an SHSBC Supervisor. Upon completion of Level P of the SHSBC, you become a Class VI Auditor, one of the Dukes of the auditing Elite, possessing a complete understanding of the philosophical and technical fundamentals of life itself!

Class VIII Course

"Here is the man – and here is his dream of salvation. This is the road. Ahead is an entire ocean of lies. But what has been discovered are the known barriers on a known road that leads him to salvation. And then he rushes forward – Vvvvvvvm!" "Here it is, the road to salvation. It has a known number of barriers. Standard Technology opens these barriers one after another. And Standard Technology also gives you ways to pick a person up and put him back on the road if he suddenly veers off to the right, to the left, runs into a telegraph pole, or something like that. There are not eight different ways to do it. And it doesn't require anyone's opinions." – LRH (from the Class VIII Lecture, Definition of Standard Technology). A person who has completed the SHSBC has a complete understanding of Scientology in its entirety and knows all its history. He has become an expert Auditor, skillfully mastering the entire philosophy of the subject. What else can be improved in such a position? Here is Ron's solution to this problem: the true nature and simplicity of Standard Technology must be clearly elucidated. Regarding technology, there are a billion trillion ways to apply it incorrectly – and only ONE way to apply it correctly. It possesses fantastic precision, and this is exactly what Class VIII deals with – 100% absolutely Standard Technology.

The Original Class VIII Course

In September 1968, a group of selected Auditors from organizations around the world gathered at Ron's request on the Sea Organization flagship "Apollo" to train under his personal supervision. In nineteen of the most powerful and impressive lectures, Ron clearly communicated the understanding of how important Standard Technology is: he laid out its essence, spoke about the incredible results that can be consistently achieved with its application, and precisely described how they, the Class VIII Auditors, must put it into effect and preserve it. With the exception of the fourth lecture in this series, all these lectures contain confidential data of the higher OT levels, available for study only to Class VIII students. This Course was conducted with the utmost rigor, without any leniency regarding errors or uncertainty. The materials were studied three times, without utilizing the advantages of Fast Flow (i.e., front checks were conducted throughout). Detailed study of numerous cases where LRH himself was the Case Supervisor was required. A huge banner in the Class VIII classroom briefly stated the purpose of this course: "YOU WILL PRODUCE 100% Standard Technology" – and by the time of graduation, the students had already proven that they were capable of doing it and would do it.

Today's Class VIII Course

Today's Class VIII Course has requirements just as rigorous as the original. It is not conducted by Fast Flow. The complete checksheet is covered three times, exactly as it was when Ron personally supervised the Course. The most basic and vitally important data in all auditing technology are elucidated, repeated, explained, demonstrated, and drilled until they occupy their unshakeable place as the foundation of the Auditor's actions and beingness – until he begins to live them. This is no longer something he thinks, remembers, or checks off on a checksheet when completing it. They simply are. The Auditor works this way – and no other. The product of such precise and unwavering application of Standard Technology is the complete absence of errors and clear, predictable results for any Preclear. Without a doubt, this is the steepest and most rigorous Course in Scientology. It offers the sole standard of understanding and work: infallibility, perfection, precision, Standardness. An Auditor who completes this Course achieves a certainty and professionalism that can only be based on perfect mastery of the technology. The famous Class VIII lectures still form the core of this course. They are also studied three times. The Class VIII Course covers the technology from the lowest levels of the Grade Chart and upward to OT III and New OT IV, including the technology for case repair for those who encountered problems on the Advanced Courses. Some of the data for OT III and OT IV repair were entrusted by Ron only to Class VIII – this is not available anywhere else on the Bridge. And only Class VIII is certified to deliver the auditing for New OT IV, the OT Drug Rundown. Class VIII students can even co-audit with each other on this fantastic level.
